Summer is in full swing and what better way to spend it than in the water? Along with all the fun, we also have to remember to be safe in the water. Here are a few ways to practice water safety:
The first way to practice water safety is to wear a life jacket! If you’re not a strong swimmer, we highly recommend wearing one when you’re swimming. Especially in deeper water such as lakes or oceans, even experienced swimmers should take precaution and wear a life jacket.
Another water safety tip is to take swim lessons! You are never too old to learn and knowing how to swim is a great skill to have. Not only is it for your safety but it is a great workout too! Although Raging Waves doesn’t offer swim lessons, many park districts offer swim lessons to all ages, so look up a place closest to you!
We also highly suggest swimming in areas you are comfortable swimming in! Don’t let friends or family pressure you into going in areas where you know is out of your comfort zone. In this case, it is better to be safe!
The last water safety tip is for parents to watch their children in the water, even if they know how to swim! You never know what could happen, especially in larger bodies of water. Be aware of your surroundings, wave patterns, and obey the warning flags the next time you’re at the lake or ocean.
Remember to practice these tips the next time you’re in the water to ensure that you have the best water experience possible!
